13-14 March 2018
A. Parallel Session
Parallel Session is the session which some speakers present
their research in front of other participants. Here, there is no question and answer
session. In below, there are some presenters who the writer resume.
1. EFL teachers’Cognition on ICT: Relevance for Training and Professional Development by Paulus Widiatmoko
In the 21st
century, technology has developed quickly. Many technologies can be used for
English learning process. Teachers should use technology in their teaching and
learning process because almost the students master technology.
There
are nine skills for 21st century teachers which are explained by the presenter.
They are:
- Record and edit audio clips by using soundcloud.com, audioboom.com, vocaroo.com and clyp.it
- Create interactive video content by using youtube video editor, wevideo.com, magisgto.com, and animato.com
- Create infographics and posters by using piktochart.com, canva.com. drawing.google.com, and thinglink.com
- Create PLNs, connect, discover new content, and grow proffesionally
- Use blogs and wikis to create parcipatory spaces for students
- Create engaging presentations
- Create digital portofolios
- Curate, organize and share digital resources
- Create digital quizzes
The
participants of the research are members of MGMP Senior High School English
teachers in Bantul, Yogyakarta.most of them are in the age 36-46. They consist
of 26,3percent males and the rest are females. 44,7 percent teachers have
experience using computer and have been teaching for 6-fifteen years, 26
percent teachers have experience using
computer and have been teaching for 16-twenty five years and the rest are 2,6
percent have experience using computer and have been teaching for 26-3 years
old.
The
presenter gave the English teachers a workshop. They were taught of
applications and technology that can be used in English teaching learning
process. The findings show that participants are positive on their attitudes
towards computer use. Despite their enthusiasm and active involved in many of
them faced technical difficulties working with computers in various problems.

2. The Effect of Watching English Movies with Subtitles on ESP students’
content and vocabulary by Eny Kusumawati
The
presenter is interested to conduct the research on her students because teaching english for ESP
students is challenging. The presenter look for a method which the students can
feel happy to learn English. Dudley Evans and St. John explained that 1) ESP is
defined to meet specific needs of learners, 2) ESP makes use of underlying
methodology and activities of disciplines it serves, and 3) ESP is centered on
the language application to these activities in terms of grammar, register,
study skill, discourse and other skill.
The
research is conducted in Politeknik Negeri Surabaya. The aims of the study are:
1) is thereany influence using subtitles and without subtitles on the students’
ESP reading comprehension, 2) is there any influence on the group treatment
with movie subtitles and the group without movie subtitles on their content of
the movie, and 3) is there any influence on the group treatment with movie
subtitles and the group without movie subtitles on their vocabulary of the
movie?.
There
are fifty six students of Politeknik Negeri Surabaya in the fifth semester with
intermediate English Proficiency level. They are 27 students of Mechatronis and
2nine students of Industrial Electronis. The research uses quasi-experimental.
The participants are divided into 2 groups according to their department
[Mechathronics department and industrial department). There are two types of
data colloction; a) quiz [given at the end of post test session) and
b)questionnaires.
The
film that is used entitled Trancendence. They know the film and they like the
film so much. However, the findings show that the students’ vocabulary and
content is not increased. The presenter said that it can happen because the
students only have fun with the movie without understanding the vocabulary or
the content. The presenter also give suggestions for other participans in
parallel session to give the students the materials which related to technology
but it can increase the motivation and English skills of the students.

3. Tap Me and I Learn More by
Itje Chodijah
This research is about the students who are given
integrated learning using technology and conducted by Itje Chodijah. There are
some reasons which make the presenter conduct the research. Here are the
reasons: a) Unstatiesfied with time allocated for public speaking and academic
speaking class, b) Students meek behaviour, c) Students motivation, d) Various
students’ Eglish competencies and e) Problematic syllabus. And also this
project has some purposes. They are
- To lead students to find their own competence and find the gap between where they are and what to achieve.
- To develop digital literacy and critical thinking
- To encourage students to realize that technology help them.
There are 17 students in the presenter’s class who become
the object of the research. In the first meeting, the researcher explained what
public speaking is, why it is an essential skill in 21st century and ask the
students to make video theirslves maximum 2 minutes about themselves. Mrs Itje
also added that we are as the teacher or lecturer not only just delivering
material but we have to get the objective. That is what the students achieve.
Here
are the process of the learning which the speaker conducted:
- The students are asked to record themselves as the best as possible in different theme.
- After they have recorded, Mrs Itje and the students have discussed the video. Then share and evaluate the recorded, whether it is good and it is bad.
- Mrs Itje evaluated the sight of the eye, the body language, and how they catch the audience intention. Thus, she is not focused on the grammar.
- Control their body language
- Eliminate shyness
- Control time when talking, in the first time, the students waste the time for only introduction.
- Correct their mistakes
- Practise speaking more spontaneously in public
- Train mental before speaking in public
- Vocabulary
- Assess and correct themselves
- Confident
- Control their own progress
- Learn how to cite from different resources, so they do not copy paste from the internet, they have to cite what the resources are.
In
this research, the lecture session become more flexible because the students
did not rely on the lecturer. They can control and learn by themselves. And for
the closing, Mrs Itje gives her closing statement “When we do teaching,
learning objective is the key, appreciate the students, materials and
application are only tools. However, learning is human nature.”

5. Integrating Padlet, Kahoot!, and Video Makes Apps in Teaching Procedure
Text: Technology Enhanceed Language Learning for Grade XI in SMPN 4 Bandung by
Dian Harnita
“Children cannot be effective in tomorrow’s world if they
are trained in yesterday’s skills” [UK Department for Education and Employment,
1997, foreword, cited in Yang: 2012)
The statement above makes the presenter conducted the
teaching learning process using technology in her class. The applications that
she used are Padlet, Kahoot, Worditout, and Photostory. These applications can
be used for enhancing students’ interest and comprehension. There are some
stages in integrating technology in teaching procedure text. The steps are: a) Building
knowledge of the text, b) Modelling of the text, c) differences between manual
and recipe in procedure text, d) Review social function and features of
procedure text using Kahoot! application, explanation of design story board and
Photo Story, e) making story board and collect materials, and f) editing and
padleting the videos.
To prepare competitive human resources, integrating
technology into classroom is a necessity. However, there should be an intense
support and mentoring from the teacher to the students, no matter how sophisticated the tools are, teacher is still the most
influential ‘tool’ in the classroom. That is the closing statement from the
presenter.

B. Workshop
Workshop is a session which train the
participants a skill or using the technology or application. The application
can be used for integrating in teaching learning process especially English
lesson. It is very useful for teachers and students as participants.
1.
Kahoot!: Bring the Fun into the Classroom! By Grace Nathania Clara
Sabandar and Yessy Zakaria
In this workshop the presenter, Grace, trained us to
learn the strategies to incorporate Kahoot in teaching learning process. Here,
participants learn how to play Kahoot. Participants are as the students and the
presenter as the teacher. It is so fun especially for people who never play the
game and have to answer the correct grammar at once. This game is very useful
for the teacher to integrate it in teaching learning process. The teacher can
know the quickest student who answer, and also who answer correctly and
wrongly. Then, the presenter lead the participants to make Kahoot account.
Firstly, participants have to go to the website kahoot.com, sign up and make
the questions for the game. In the process of signing up, Grace and Yessy
assist the participants if there is a problem. In conlusion, the participants
have trained how to use Kahoot application and how to make Kahoot account.
2. A Small Step to Unpacking Students’ Design Thinking Skill in Language
Classes by Gumawang Jati and Finita Dewi
There are two speakers in this workshop.
They are Mr Gumawang and Ms Finita. They trained the participants how to use
canva. Firstly, they showed the participants a video about water pollution in
Bandung. After that, the participants are asked to think what we can do for
that problem. Then, the speakers asked the participants to make a tag line for
persuading other people to attention of this problem. Then, the participants
have to put some pictures which related to the tagline. And the participants
were trained to make a design campaign poster using canva.
Besides, the speakers also explained the stages of
integrating Canva in teaching learning process. They are: 1) Identify the
opportunities; the teacher can give a video to wacth and discuss the problem,
2) design; in this process, it can be brainstorm ideas, discuss in group and
get input from the teacher, 3) prototype; in this process the teacher asks the
students to create a draft for making campaign poster, 4) get feedback; a group
can pitch ideas form other group, and ) present; the students present the final
digital poster. Mr Gumawang gave a suggestion to not introduce the tool firstly.
If the teacher introduce the tool first, the students will not focus on
language learning.
C. Seminar
The seminar was conducted in Main Hall
of Best Premier Solo. There are a keynote speaker and two plenary speakers.
They gave many useful knowledge about the concept of TPACK, the practice in technology, and
cyber crime of internet. Here are the resume of what the speakers presented.
1.
TELL: From Resources to Thinking Skills by Dr. A. Gumawang Jati, M.A.
In this era, all of things has been moved to technology.
For example, market can become online shop, taxi becomes online car, and many
others. In addition, technology can be integrated in teaching learning process
in classroom. Technology gives impacts for eduation. They are classroom
practice and available material.
Mr
Gumawang, as English Lecturer in ITB, said that there are many tools of
technology which can be integrated for teaching learning process in class. In
this session, he gave many useful websites or tools that can be used. They are:
- Ello.org; it is used for learning listening skill

TPACK: The Concept and Practice to Build Multimodal Literacy 21st
Century by Dr. Nur Arifah Drajati
Mrs Arifah, an English Lecturer of
Sebelas Maret University, presented the concept of TPACK and its practice in
teaching. Theoretical conception of TPACK itself comes from Shulman with his
research program “Knowledge Growth in Teaching” thought about teachers’
disparity. It is about: a) how teacher has new knowledge, b) how old knowledge
retrieved and linked to form new information, c) what are the sources of
teachers’ information, d) what is teacher’s information and e) how to get
information. For more than fifty years, the theoretical concept has been
thought. Shulman also explained three things. They are subject matter content,
pedagogical content knowledge, and curricular knowledge. Then, this theory was
continued by Kohler and Mishra in 200nine. It is about content, pedagogy, and
technology boost new knowledge for students in learning new concepts in
practical ways. This theory discussed about how use technology in teaching and
learning process. In most of teaching learning process, it is only learned
about technology or only pedagogy without using technology or only using
textbook/ content knowledge. There are many resources for getting knowledge
from everywhere, such as book, internet, journal, and other resources.
There
are 3 important points of theoretical concept of TPACK:
- Content Knowledge is talking about fact, concept and theories.
- Pedagogical Knowledge is talking about how instructional strategy, teaching methods and instructional strategy applied in classroom, such as project based learning and think-pair-share.
- Technological Knowledge is talking about how to integrate the technology in classroom, select-use-integrate into the curriculum, and new insight for students in learning.
The importance thing is how teachers can integrate
technology in their classroom because in this era the teachers should make the
students feel fun and understand of the learning and also many of sophisticated
technology can be integrated in classroom.
The speaker also presents the practice of TPACK. In
Singapore, there are four design of QL which created by Chai and Koh [2006).
They are: 1) Active Learning, 2) Authentic Learning, 3) Reflective Learning and
4) Collaborative Learning. The speaker also shared her experienced when she was
teaching, she asked the students to read the books [extensive reading) and
making story by themselves. In addition, when the speaker becomes a lecturer,
the students were asked to join conference, have discussion and write blog and
journal.
For conlusion, the speaker gave suggestion to integrate
technology in teaching learning process in order that the students can enhance
knowledge and have good experience with their teacher.
3.
Cyber Bullying and Child Protection by Riezky Novyana
Nowadays, sophisticated technology gives impacts to the
life. Here, the speaker presentes how bad of cyber bullying especially for
children and give attention to the children in using technology. He explained
that there are many users of internet in the world. However, some of people use
internet for cyber-crime. Mr Riezky also adds that there are many predators who
sight on children. Thus, parents’ attention is important to the children in
using internet or social media.
Mr Riezky also explains that there is a tool that can be
used to look for someone’s internet usage. That is called digital footprint. It
is a trail of data user create while using the internet. It includes the
websites that user visits, emails which user sends and information user submit
to online services. Som e company also use digital footprint for recruiting the
employee. It will help whether the candidates is a cyber criminal or not. He
also emphasized on being carefully in using internet for whoever who use it,
either children or adult users because every usage of internet will be
recorded. Thus, parents should more pay attention to their children.
He also showed the participants a video of Ananda Todd, a
victim of cyber-crime. It is told that she was asked to show her vital body by
the predators. Then, she was asked again to show her full body, but she was
rejected. Not long time, photo of her vital body became a photo profile of the
predator. It really makes she hurt and she was also bullyed in the school. She
was very sad. Although she had moved to other environment, she faced problems.
She could not stand because no one wanted to hear her story. She felt lonely
and finally she died by herself.
In the end, he emphasized that the participants should be
careful and smart in using internet. And for parents, they should pay attention
to their children in using internet.
